Rolling into Austin bright and early, we found a tex/mex joint, El Chilito, for breakfast. Very tasty! The only real goal was to hit up South Austin Music. I shipped my guitar to Uncle Bob a few days back. An old Yamaha. It was one of Uncle Bob’s first guitars, and my first. It holds quite a bit of sentimental value. I was caught outside in the rain with it, freaking me out. I worried about ruining it, hauling it around, putting it through the daily van shuffle. Still, all these years later I can hardly play, but enjoy banging on it nearly every day. My goal was to find a traveling stringed thing.
We toured around the different districts, checking out the sites. I always wanted to visit Austin. Hearing about the music, hotrod, and chopper culture. But alas, I didn’t realize it was such a BIG city! Population close to the million mark, dang, it feels like an overcrowded ant farm, except everyone is wearing fancy shoes.
While checking out Castle Hills Graffiti Park, on a very tight street, we came upon a car full of tourists blocking the road and taking pics. I stopped adjacent to a driveway to make passing easy, but nope. The tourist filled car realized they were holding up traffic, saw our beast of a van, and panicked! They mashed the gas, and frantically side swiped the vehicle directly before the open space. Their poor decision making was quite comical to watch. We couldn’t help but bust out laughing when she started yelling at us! Yes, I’m sorry for riding down a public street, stopping at the wide spot to make it easy for you!
Pulling off from the entertainment, we didn’t even make it a block. Another high end sedan, full of people, sees us coming their way. What do they do? Jump the 12″ curb! Yeah, that seems legit! Traveling maybe 5 mph, oh shit!, a big van, jump the Beamer honey! With a hellacious scrape, bang, and some minor wheel spinning, they were off in the other direction. Wtf? Who issues licenses down here?
We finally made it to South Austin Music. A great little shop, with cool people, and stringed things. A new ukelele and 100 bucks later, adios Austin!
I am thoroughly enjoying the accounts of the travels of two fine adventurers whose exploits of ordinary life are being magnified and clarified with simplicity, charm and a style of entertainment all its own. Keep up the good work. It is enjoyable to reflect upon your observations.
So great to have you along on our ride! We look forward to the possibilities… ?
Interesting…enjoy reading them?
Haha, glad to hear! ?
