Finally, some odd thousand miles later, we started seeing brief moments of sunshine. We welcomed these moments.
New Mexico, the land of enchantment. Something in the air changed as we crossed out of Texas, and into New Mexico. The vibe was lighter, the locals friendlier and less guarded. The landscape slowly transformed into a much more magnificent appeal.
Hearing of some natural hot springs, and ancient cliff dwellings in the mountains north of Silver City, we instantly decided to head in their direction. After a two hour drive, through 30 some miles of a twisting mountain road, we arrived in Gila Hot Springs. Rolling in after dark, we navigated the campground and found a sweet spot by the creek. $6 bucks a night, and unlimited hot spring use, hell yeah! We popped the top, set camp, and headed for the springs.
The walk to the springs certainly primed us for a long, hot soak. With the night air less than 20 degrees, the 104 degree soaking tub was an absolute delight. We shared the soaking tubs with only a handful of other like minded hippies, and vagabonds, instantly feeling at home. Free to Ahhh…..the simple life
