Whiteout

After a blissful weekend in Gila Hot Springs, it was time to shake and move again.  A winter storm on our tail . We rode into Silver City to take care of a few errands, hoping to get out of dodge before the storm hit.

Silver City is small, quirky, and colorful, with a population around 10k. The streets are lined with a wide variety of eccentric shops, all seeming to be on their own time schedule.  The city has a whimsical, southwestern feel, the people friendly, and free.

We made our plan for the day at Javalina Coffee House, where I was served a real dirty chai.  It was absolutely splendid, no pre-made, box shit here!

One thing about living in a van, life is simple, but also quite slow. It takes about ten times longer than “normal”, to do one chore. Always in a strange town, not knowing which way is which, hounding free wifi for information. Quite often just driving in circles.

Aimlessly leaving town after dark, we didn’t make it far before the storm moved in. Conditions deteriorated quickly. The snow sticking, and coming down hard. We knew there was National Forest land ahead, so we pressed forward. Driving in near whiteout conditions, both of us pressed against the dash, trying to make out the road, we finally made it to the National Forest.  Just a few miles in, we found an acceptable spot, and popped the top.  Ahh, a sigh of relief.  Crank up the heater, sit back, and wonder what the morning will bring…
