We stayed a couple of nights at our camp near San Yisidro. Upon leaving, we stopped at our first mercado in Erendira, a little village overlooking the pacific. The locals were all very cheerful and friendly, while bustling around their tiny community.
Running into an expat on the way in, we stopped and chatted for a bit. He calls Erendira home, traveling to baja since ’72. When I asked him of the safety, he replied, “Not a concern, you will have no trouble if you show respect.” He continued, “And definitely try out the food from the street vendors. The people that get sick from the food, well, they were already shitting their pants before they crossed the border!”
The surf in the area looked great, quite big, reef break. But honestly, we were scared of it. So we decided to beat feet, and head to Moro Santo Domingo. Even though we felt safe and comfortable, we wanted to continue south, out of “the danger zone”. Moro Santo Domingo called to us, with a surf description of mellow, sand bottom, point break.
We enjoyed the ride south, much more relaxed now, our spirits high with the promise of warmer weather.
As we approached the estuary of Santo Domingo, we were in awe. The water a beautiful hue of deep turquoise, whales spouting as far as the eye could see. We navigated a sand trail up to the lighthouse, and could not believe the view. A picture perfect little cove, with a sandy beach and chest high surf, peeling off like a dream. We couldn’t contain our excitement as we popped the top, or pull on our wetsuits fast enough. Our Baja dream come true!
We surfed and played in our private little cove for three days straight. Seals frolicked in the surf with us, whales spouted and showed us their slow acrobats, creating a pure and magical corner of the Pacific, all surrounding our tiny home like a globe. Truly a post card setting, never to be forgotten.
We saw one other family our entire stay. Happy and excited to see us, they cherished the view for a few, and were off. Each of them so happy, friendly, and warm. Such a contrast to the Mexico we were warned about. Welcome to Baja!……
Again, we are blown away sharing with you the peacefully relaxing views of the western Mexican coastline with its friendly people, seals and whales romping in the gentle surfs.
The whale and seal were truly amazing. It is such an incredible experience to go through daily routines, while being so close, watching such magnificent beings.
Awesome.
Truly! ?
