Let’s head south for the winter and miss all of the nasty weather, haha, right! We haven’t seen the sun since Grayton beach, FL!
We spent a day at Pedernales Falls State Park, west of Austin. Pedernales Falls was neat, and the surrounding wilderness was a welcome break from the last few days of trucking. The dogs were able to get some much needed romp time, galavanting around the Texas terrain. We were all thankful to surround ourselves in nature and stretch our legs. After a day of exploring, and a much needed hot shower, we decided to move on. Trying to catch some better weather.
Driving across 10 is a rather DULL ride. We parked for the night in a defunct rest area, a good bit east of El Paso. We were the only ones brave enough to stay in the cesspool of a lot, bordered by some sort of plant, oozing with the smell of chemicals. We popped the top, delirious from the road, knowing it may take all night to find something more suitable on the empty highway ahead. As we walked across the lot to use the facilities before bed, we saw the sign. OUT OF ORDER.
In the middle of the night, I jump out of bed. It sounded like a helicopter landing right on top of us! What the hell? No, just a truckers apu unit with no muffler. Nice, a huge empty lot and he parks right beside us. His apu (aux power unit) cuts off, and just as we start to settle down, rarrr! Great! His reefer starts, apparently with no muffler as well. After a couple cycles of both, we finally drift back off, with the sounds of loud trucks dancing in our heads.
Out in the west Texas town of El Paso… not nearly as romantic as The Dead tune made us believe… The 2016 El Paso has the real feel of a border city. In which, I had my first Spanish interaction! El bano es lleno. He seemed to understand, replying, ah, si.
After running errands, we were off again. The presence of border patrol was thick, hell, I was scared of them. Ford Raptors with high clearance bumpers, knobby tires, oh man, you sure aren’t out running these guys……
