Before leaving Tucson, we stopped at a local off-road shop for another spare gas can. While checking us out, the cashier recommended the Kofa Mountains, in western Arizona. We love when locals cue us in on sweet spots!
The west coast is very welcoming to van lifers. An abundance of public land offers free camping, in the most wildly beautiful areas. We decided to check out Palm Canyon in the Kofa Mountains, one of two areas in which palms still grow wild in Arizona.
Rolling without an itinerary has been awesome. Our busy life before moving into the van did not exactly allow this. This loose idea approach, has slowly created a habit of hitting the road late in the afternoon, forcing us to navigate unknown areas in the dark. Day after day, we wake up in an incredible place, excitedly enjoying the area, we quickly loose track of time. The search for warmer weather eventually kicks in, and we feel the need to press on. This habit will need to be broken for south of the border travel!
We rolled into the Kofa Wildlife Refuge late under darkness, and once again were blessed with an incredible location upon awakening. We were finally out of the rain, and thankfully greeted with a little warmer weather.
We are now feeling quite comfortable in our rolling home. We fix the majority of our meals in our tiny kitchen, mostly adjusted to the change. Everything has finally settled into it’s place. Although there will always be the “van shuffle”, we officially have a system. The warmer weather brings some relief, with the dogs comfortable hanging outside, making the van seem quite roomy!
Coffee, breakfast, yoga, hiking. Today’s hike was up a service road to the trail head of Palm Canyon. Palm Canyon sits nestled in the mountains, with a micro-climate amongst the desert, creating a tiny oasis for the remaining palm trees of Arizona. It is a short, semi-strenuous hike to reach the canyon, the rock walls towering above the trail, creating a sense of security. To reach the palms, there is a tight scramble between the cracks and protruding cliff walls, but if you’re feeling adventurous, it is oh so worth it! A quirky, but quite magnificent area, worthy of putting on the list!
