We decided to ride into Bahia Asuncion for some internet, before continuing south. Holy smokes, the internet is slow! We killed the morning and most of the afternoon taking care of business. No problema, we only have 50 miles to our next destination, Abreojos.
While in town, a couple from California cued us in on a sand bottom point break in Abreojos. We were finally on our way, but we soon learned we were not getting anywhere quickly. This slow pace is beginning to become a bit of a pattern in Baja! We have been traveling on some rough roads, but this one took the cake. Washboard like we have never seen before. High speed worked the best, but this was not an option for us because of the huge, washed out sections that would pop up out of nowhere, waiting to swallow us whole!
Slowly and steadily, we continued south. The sun was beginning to set and we realized we were not making our destination, “but it was only 50 miles”! Rule number 1, no traveling after dark. Just as the sun disappeared, we settled in beside an estuary.
We woke to the estuary full of marine life, with birds playing sweet melodies and fish jumping in every direction we looked. While enjoying our morning coffee, we watched a dolphin have a feeding frenzy, mere feet in front of us.
Continuing our southern trek, we headed into the dunes west of Abrejos, setting camp in front of a little beach break. A nice gentleman, with his adorable puppy following, rode his bicycle out to our camp to say hola. Upon arriving, he immediately observed that Rose was both gorda y loca! (fat and crazy) His 4 month old pup had a ball romping around with Rasta and Rose, while we tried to converse. Again, not a word of English spoken here! We had a lively conversation about who, what, when, where, and why, leaving off with smiles and laughter.
The next day, we set out for that sand bottom point we were told about…Across the airstrip towards the cluster of houses, head left at the coast towards the single house in the distance… Those directions did the trick, leading us directly to a beautiful camp spot. We still can not believe the “million dollar view” camps, with epic surf that Baja continues to offer! Sand bottom, right hand point, chest high, and not a soul in sight, don’t mind if we do!
