Cliff Dwellings

In the mountains above Silver City, NM, we found the Gila Cliff Dwellings, amazingly dated between 1276 and 1287.

There are close to fifty rooms built inside five, natural caves. Man, this is such an amazing place to experience, with incredible energy!  Using little more than their hands, the Mogollons built dwellings that are remarkably intricate, and intact for being over 7 centuries old.

It is very humbling to explore here. To soak in the depth of civilization in the Americas, before they were “discovered”.

Lucky enough to be camped right around the corner, we were able to enjoy the cliff dwellings in the morning, having it mostly to ourselves. The sun finally peaked through, making the cold air feel much warmer.  Sadly, not for long. There was a storm moving in, arriving in two days.

We made the most of our time in Gila Hot Springs, playing with the dogs, cooking, and lounging in the pools. Surely a place to put on the list, especially if you find yourself in the southern areas in the land of enchantment.
